I'm that person who always leaves Halloween ideas till the very last minute, has nothing in and has to improvise. This post is for everyone else who does the same thing! I don't use any pre bought halloween makeup items like face paint or fake blood, i just use what I already have in my collection and try to make it look just as good as the shop bought stuff! I'm no makeup artist and have never ventured into the world of special effects makeup so it all is super basic and easy, just ideas that you may not have thought of before! I hope you enjoy my 5 top tips!
Use pale foundation instead of white face paint
I never ever buy the white face paint to make you pale on Halloween because 1. it breaks you out 2. it never stays on throughout the night and 3. it doesn't even look realistic and always goes streaky. If you use a pale foundation you might have lying around, or pop to the shop and buy a cheap one (Revolution foundation sticks are a fiver, go to insanely pale shades, have amaazing coverage and stays on all night) then not only will it look way more realistic because it's not pure white but it will also make your skin look good and be far easier to work with. For those who don't wear foundation normally, just blend it in with a makeup sponge or even rub it in with your hands, the same way you'd apply face paint! Also if you're going out partying remember to always set it with some translucent power or setting spray!
Gloss for blood!
This is probably the most important tip in this post! Even if you have fake blood I'd still recommend using red gloss instead! It doesn't dry down and therefore remains wet like a fresh wound, it's got a stickier formula so it doesn't drip down and get everywhere and you can also control where you apply it, and it doesn't stain! In these picture I'm using the Little Mix camera reddy gloss and the Tanya burr Berry picking gloss. Putting the gloss through the hair near the wound also looks great! Other red glosses I recommend are the NYX Butterglosses, L'oréal colour riche glosses and for high end, of course Kylie glosses.
Use two shades of red for realistic fake blood
This one may be obvious to some people, but it's worth a mention anyway! When doing fake blood drooling out from the mouth or wherever, never use just one shade of red if you want it too look realistic! If you're using lipstick try and use a bright, pure red (for example Blake's Pure Red from L'oréal) and then layer on some deeper red at the top or at the source of the wound to make it look like dried blood (eg Rimmel Kate Moss 107) An easy way of making it look a little more realistic! For glosses I used the LMX camera reddy gloss and the Tanya Burr gloss in Berry Picking. If you only have a bright red lip, you can always brush over some deep red or brown eyeshadow over some of it to give a similar effect.
Brown shadows under the eyes for a realistic sunken eye look
This is a trick I used when doing my brothers and my family were very impressed with the result. My brother went as a zombie and in order to make his under eyes look really work out and sunken I used a pale brown eyeshadow (similar to most cool blonde eyebrow powders) and it look so much more realistic than using greys or greens under the eyes which most people opt for. I also took a pale green single shadow to draw some subtle veins around his eyes, some of which you can see in the pic below, and took a red shade just below and above to make his eyes look swore. I used the original Soph palette for all of this! The shade Pug for his under eyes, and used the shade pumpkin as a base for the lip glosses for blood (and for the redness around his eyes) and the deep red shade for brushing over the gloss to give a scab effect to the skin, as shown in my brothers beard in the picture below.
Easy Spooky Lip Ombre
This may be quite obvious so some too, but if you have a smaller collection of makeup this is a great trick as all you need is any old red lip and any old black eyeliner! Line your lips with the black liner and then apply red over the lip for a quick, easy and simple spooky ombre lip effect! Feel free to blend them together a little more with your finger than I have as I was in a rush, oops!
And that's that! If you liked this post I'll be sure to do another dress up themed post.. Maybe an easy festive makeup look or something! Let me know. And thank you to Theo for letting me use the pictures of him after I did his makeup yesterday, and giving me the confidence boost to share my ideas with you! Happy Halloween!
